And by the way, did you know that whereas movies are customarily shot and screened at 24 frames per second, traditional animators regularly fill each second with only 12 frames? This technique—called “shooting on twos”—still creates motion sufficiently fluid to the human eye but cuts animators’ workload in half. Particularly slow scenes can be shot even “on threes” or “on fours.”

However, if a sequence calls for rapid, snappy action, animators typically go back to shooting on ones, creating a full 24 frames for every second. (This video is a great demonstration of the different looks.)
