Recently, Russell Shaw realized that he had texted his kids the same two words\u2014Too loud<\/i>\u2014133 times since 2020. \u201cThe backstory to each, I\u2019m sure, was relatively consistent,\u201d he writes. \u201cI was in bed, thinking about my schedule for the next day\u2014a board meeting, a difficult conversation I needed to have\u2014when from downstairs came the noise. Shrieks of laughter. Trash talk escalating over a video game … Or perhaps it was someone deciding at 11 p.m. that they would absolutely die<\/i> without a McFlurry, kicking off a negotiation over who should place the DoorDash order.\u201d<\/p>\n

The texts Shaw had sent weren\u2019t just instances of minor annoyance: They have become a record of the precious time, he writes, when his kids and their friends were always around and the house was full. \u201cMy children knew, I think, that the Too loud<\/i> texts were not quite what they appeared to be\u2014that, yes, I was saying Keep it down<\/i>, but what I meant was closer to I know you\u2019re there; I\u2019m glad you\u2019re here<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaw wishes he had known then what he was really trying to tell them; but that\u2019s how it happens, he writes. \u201cYou don\u2019t know you\u2019re in the good years until you\u2019re standing in the quiet they left behind.\u201d Today\u2019s newsletter explores what we share with our families, and what we find the hardest to say.<\/p>\n
