That record was set over 14 weeks by Houston\u2019s \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d in 1992 and 1993, and then matched by Carey\u2019s \u201cWe Belong Together\u201d in 2005. (We\u2019re talking about non-holiday tracks; the 22-week reign of Carey\u2019s \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You\u201d is in a class of its own.) The Alabama-born Langley has been rising in country music for a couple of years now, but her second album, this year\u2019s <em>Dandelion<\/em>, has leapt the genre\u2019s fences to reach a general audience. Three Langley tracks are in the top 10 of the <em>Billboard<\/em> Hot 100. The single \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d may soon notch its 15th week at No. 1, breaking Carey and Houston\u2019s records. Where those women belted loudly, Langley offers moderation\u2014an appealing commodity in this cultural moment.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Understanding that moment means understanding how the meaning of the <em>Billboard<\/em> charts has changed since Houston and Carey\u2019s days: Thanks to streaming, what matters is how often a song is played, not only how many copies it sells. That shift has helped country music\u2014which generally seeks to weave itself into everyday life rather than stick out through spectacle\u2014become the popular sound of the 2020s. When Morgan Wallen\u2019s \u201cLast Night\u201d hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2023, it was the first country song to do so since 2005 (unless you count edge cases such as Taylor Swift\u2019s 10-minute \u201cAll Too Well,\u201d which charted in the country world despite sounding more like pop folk, and Lil Nas X\u2019s \u201cOld Town Road,\u201d a source of categorization controversy). Since then, 10 other country tracks have made it to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Out of all the arrivals to Nashville\u2019s gold rush, Langley doesn\u2019t seem like an obvious candidate for success. Her voice tends to stay in a middle range, with only a slight hint of huskiness. Her arrangements aim for modern classicism, placing familiar instruments\u2014guitars, mandolins, Wurlitzer pianos\u2014in polished productions that forgo twists or anthemic buildups. Her tattoos and brunette bangs hint at a bohemian persona, but her glossy-looking album covers and easygoing interview responses aren\u2019t very edgy. To hear what\u2019s unusual about her, you have to listen closely, and pick up on what she\u2019s not saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d is a breezy, sad track that sounds like an even gentler version of the Eagles. The narrator is from Tennessee; her man is from Texas; Langley realizes he\u2019s leaving her for a girl from his home state. The details are precisely chosen clich\u00e9s: She\u2019s tipped off by \u201cthe way he\u2019s two-steppin\u2019 round the room\u201d; in a lovely, pedal-steel-drenched second verse, she muses that he must\u2019ve \u201cforgot about the Smoky Mountain rain.\u201d She doesn\u2019t sound mad, or even annoyed, by this betrayal. Because she knows she \u201cwasn\u2019t a match\u201d for the spark of a Texas girl, she \u201cshoulda known better than to take him back to Abilene.\u201d She\u2019s soberly analyzing her defeat\u2014and trying to teach herself a lesson.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Langley\u2019s work features that kind of wry self-talk. Her hit \u201cI Can\u2019t Love You Anymore,\u201d a collaboration with Wallen, is like a lecture from her brain to her heart: \u201cWhat part of <em>over<\/em> don\u2019t I understand?\u201d she chides herself when she gets to daydreaming about an ex. On \u201cWeren\u2019t for the Wind,\u201d a single from her 2024 debut, <em>Hungover<\/em>, she mixes and matches grammatical tenses to suit the layers of her own flakiness: \u201cI\u2019d make a promise but I know later \/ I\u2019m bound to change my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/commercialrelocationpros.com\/?p=1520\">The Ostrich Effect<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Introspection is hardly foreign to country music, but Langley\u2019s coolly reflective approach stands out in a genre defined by social collisions\u2014by scenes of cowboys and cowgirls settling scores. Langley\u2019s mentor Miranda Lambert, a co-writer on \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d and an executive producer for <em>Dandelion<\/em>, broke out in the 2000s with scorching revenge anthems such as \u201cKerosene\u201d and \u201cGunpowder &amp; Lead.\u201d Wallen specializes in whiskey-drunk seductions to skeptical girls who can\u2019t resist his charms. The inevitability that underlies many of Langley\u2019s songs recalls \u201cI Can\u2019t Make You Love Me\u201d by the Americana legend Bonnie Raitt, but in the place of Raitt\u2019s devastation, Langley shrugs with acceptance.<\/p>\n<p>One of Langley\u2019s best\u2014and most telling\u2014songs is another current smash, \u201cBe Her.\u201d Over a groove punctuated by polite handclaps, Langley airs her jealousy about a woman who \u201cdrinks wine by the glass, not by the bottle,\u201d who \u201cknows being rich is just a state of mind,\u201d and who \u201cstays talkin\u2019 to Jesus.\u201d In other words, she\u2019s fascinated by a good girl\u2014one who\u2019s internalized the advice of her parents, the Bible, and definitely some wellness podcasts. Although the reference points here are Christian, the outlook scans a bit Buddhist: The song\u2019s subject doesn\u2019t desire \u201cmuch of anything.\u201d Perhaps the person Langley wants to be is not someone else but rather a dream of her own enlightened future self.<\/p>\n<p>The song is a perfectly Gen Z take on \u201cJolene\u201d\u2014Dolly Parton\u2019s country classic of female jealousy\u2014in that it\u2019s about self-control rather than sex appeal. Striking a balance between mellowness and fun is an imperative for a cohort that\u2019s drinking less, hooking up less, and staying in more. Many other country stars of the moment, including the oft-canceled Wallen and the former drug dealer Jelly Roll, present as sinners struggling for redemption. Langley\u2019s closest sonic predecessor, Kacey Musgraves, has long searched for transcendence\u2014though in more woo-woo terms than Langley does, and with (on Musgraves\u2019s lusty new album) the sort of neediness that often gets written off as cringe.<\/p>\n<p>Langley could never be cringe. She wants love but doesn\u2019t sweat attachment; if her guy is gonna leave her for Texas, she\u2019s not going to siege the Alamo. Partying, sex, adventure\u2014on <em>Dandelion<\/em>, she treats these less like life\u2019s great temptations and more like small, manageable indulgences. Her music accordingly pares down the signature elements of a genre in which reckless abandon and defiant self-expression have long been central. I think I enjoy Langley\u2019s pale and pleasant songs, but I can barely remember how they sound when I\u2019m not listening.
